To lower the resolution for less choppy gameplay, first open 'Alternative Art' Located on the CD ROM. Copy the contents of
the 'Low Res Caviar' folder and copy it to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri .
This should help speed things up a bit.
Also in C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, there is a .ini file where you can force Video Mode=800
or Video Mode=1024. simply type in > Video Mode=800 , and that should help game speed as well.
The rest is in the game options preferance area. Turning
off animated stuff and fast battle moves will also help.

Double click on My Computer
Double click on the C: Local Drive (your Hard Drive or the drive that the game is installed to)
Double click on the Program Files Folder
Double click on the Firaxis Games Folder
Double click on the Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Folder
Double click on the Alpha Centauri.ini File (The file looks like a read me text file with a little gold symbol on it).
Try the following, on your C drive open Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid
Meiers' Alpha Cetauri.
Open the Alpha Centauri.ini File contained in this folder and change
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=0 to
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1 (in the preferences section)
Save the change you have made and then try running the game.
You may still get an error message, ignore it!
